Turkish Drum Manufacturer Prioritizes Matte Finish for Regulatory Compliance
Company Profile: An Istanbul-based packaging company supplying chemical drums to paint and coating manufacturers across Turkey and the European Union.
Challenge: New EU CLP (Classification, Labelling and Packaging) regulations required hazard labels to remain affixed for the entire drum lifecycle. The customer's existing bright finish tinplate caused label peeling within 3–6 months due to low surface energy. This created safety risks and potential regulatory fines.
Solution Provided: We supplied 0.20mm Single Reduced T3 Electrolytic Tinplate Coil with Matte Finish (M) . Matte finish provides a dull, unflow-melted tin coating surface with significantly higher surface roughness (Ra 0.8–1.2μm) compared to bright finish (Ra 0.2–0.4μm). Coating: 2.8/2.8 equal tin coating. Annealing: BA (Batch Annealed) for maximum formability.
Implementation: 100 metric ton trial order. The customer printed and applied standard adhesive hazard labels to both bright finish (existing) and matte finish (new) panels. Peel tests were conducted at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months under warehouse conditions (temperature 15–35°C, humidity 40–70%).
Results:
-
Matte finish labels showed zero peeling or lifting after 6 months
-
Bright finish labels showed 40% edge lifting after 3 months
-
The customer qualified matte finish for all EU-destined chemical drums
-
Printing ink adhesion also improved by 30% on matte surface
Customer Quote: "The matte finish solved a compliance risk we didn't even know we had. Our EU customers now specifically request drums made from your tinplate."
Follow-up: The customer has converted 80% of their production to matte finish and placed a 500-metric-ton annual supply agreement.
